At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that History is more than learning about the past – it is about helping children to understand the world they live in today and to recognise their place within it. Through History, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and explore the stories, people, and events that have shaped our society.

We use the Kapow Primary History programme, which provides a well-sequenced and engaging curriculum. Each unit focuses on a key period, civilisation, or theme, building children’s historical knowledge step by step while also developing their skills as young historians. Pupils learn how to use evidence, compare and contrast different sources, and form their own interpretations of the past.

The curriculum introduces children to significant individuals and events from both British and world history. From exploring ancient civilisations to understanding local history and more recent events, pupils gain a broad and balanced understanding of how the past influences the present. Lessons are brought to life through storytelling, artefacts, drama, and discussion, making learning both meaningful and memorable.

At St. Joseph’s, we aim for children to leave with not only secure historical knowledge but also an appreciation of diversity, culture, and change over time. By developing curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking, History equips our pupils with the skills to reflect on the past and to make thoughtful contributions to the future.
