Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Church in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, is a vibrant parish within the Diocese of Brentwood, with a history dating back to the early 20th century.
The Catholic mission in Stanford-le-Hope began in 1909, leading to the establishment of the first church that same year. In 1913, a second church was constructed, designed by Fr. Benedict Williamson. The parish was formally erected in 1918, marking its official recognition within the diocese.
During the 1920s, the parish expanded significantly, covering an area of about 100 square miles, including communities such as Basildon, Corringham, and Pitsea. The early years were marked by financial challenges, with diocesan surveys listing the parish as the poorest mission in the Archdiocese of Westminster. Despite these hardships, the parish community remained resilient.
The parish's commitment to education was strengthened in 1930 when the Sisters of Mercy from Wanstead began staffing the parish school. Their dedication ensured the school's continuity and growth, with the Sisters serving for over sixty years.
In 1989, a major fire severely damaged the church, revealing structural decay that necessitated a complete rebuild. The new church, consecrated in February 1993 by Bishop Thomas McMahon, features a design inspired by Italian churches, incorporating elements such as pale-yellow brickwork, walnut furniture, and traditional stained-glass windows from the earlier building.
Today, Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Church continues to serve the spiritual needs of the Stanford-le-Hope community. The parish offers regular Masses, sacraments, and various ministries, maintaining its longstanding tradition of faith and service. The current parish priest is Father Anthony Cho, who has been serving since 2018.
