  • English Writing

At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that writing is a powerful tool for communication, creativity, and self-expression. Our approach to teaching English Writing is designed to inspire children to write with confidence, purpose, and enjoyment, while developing the technical skills they need to succeed across the curriculum.

We root our teaching in genre-based learning, ensuring that pupils are exposed to a wide variety of writing styles, from narratives and poetry to reports, letters, and persuasive texts. By understanding the features and purposes of different genres, children learn how to structure their writing effectively and adapt their style to suit the audience and context.

Our writing lessons are closely linked to topical texts and the wider curriculum, allowing children to draw on their knowledge of history, science, geography, and RE in meaningful ways. This approach makes writing purposeful, engaging, and relevant, encouraging pupils to explore ideas, express opinions, and share their learning creatively.

Children develop key skills in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary, while also learning to plan, draft, edit, and refine their work. Lessons are interactive and collaborative, giving pupils the chance to discuss ideas, give and receive feedback, and celebrate their achievements as writers.

At St. Joseph’s, we aim to nurture confident, independent writers who are curious about language, excited to express their thoughts, and equipped with the skills to succeed both in school and beyond. Writing here is not just a subject – it is a way for children to make their voices heard and bring their ideas to life.
