At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is about more than just fitness – it is about developing the whole child. Through PE, children learn the importance of health and well-being, while also building essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and confidence.

We use the GetSet4PE programme, which provides a structured and engaging curriculum. Each unit focuses on a different sport or skill, giving pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities from gymnastics and dance to invasion games, athletics, and outdoor challenges. This variety ensures that every child can discover their strengths and develop a love for being active.

PE lessons are taught by a specialist PE Coach (Mr. Glasinger) and our class teachers.

PE lessons at St. Joseph’s are not only about improving physical ability. We place great emphasis on nurturing children’s social, emotional, and thinking skills. Whether working collaboratively in a team game, showing determination in a personal challenge, or reflecting on strategies to improve, pupils are encouraged to develop skills that will support them across the wider curriculum and prepare them for life beyond primary school.

Through fun, inclusive, and purposeful PE lessons, we aim to inspire children to be active for life, to enjoy sport, and to recognise the value of perseverance, fair play, and respect. At St. Joseph’s, PE is a vital part of helping every child grow into a healthy, confident, and well-rounded individual.

In the 2023/2024 academic year, 39% of Year 6 children were able to independently and confidently swim at least 25m unaided across a range of strokes.
