At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, our curriculum is rooted in the Gospel values of love, respect, and service. We aim to provide a transformative education that nurtures the "whole child," ensuring that every pupil recognises their unique worth as a child of God.
Our curriculum is intentionally designed to bridge academic excellence with character formation, powered by our six core Learning Powers. We don't just teach subjects; we teach children how to learn, how to think, and how to thrive in an ever-changing world.
We believe that by embedding these six dispositions into lessons, from EYFS to Year 6, we empower our students to become lifelong learners.
| Power | Curriculum Intent |
| Independence | To foster self-reliance and the confidence to take risks. We provide opportunities for pupils to lead their own learning and manage their time and resources effectively. |
| Motivation | To ignite a passion for excellence. Our curriculum is aspirational, encouraging children to take pride in their work and strive for their personal best in all things. |
| Cooperation | To mirror the community of the Church. Through collaborative projects and talk-led learning, pupils learn the value of empathy, communication, and collective success. |
| Creativity | To celebrate the "Divine Spark." We encourage "out of the box" thinking across the arts, sciences, and humanities, allowing children to express their understanding in diverse ways. |
| Stickability | To build resilience (grit). We teach that mistakes are milestones. Our curriculum challenges pupils to persevere through "the pit" of learning until they reach mastery. |
| Curiosity | To maintain a sense of wonder at God’s creation. We ask "big questions" that drive inquiry, prompting children to look deeper and ask "why?" and "how?" |
Christ-Centered: Religious Education is the "foundation of the entire educational process." Our curriculum allows children to explore their faith and the faiths of others with respect and depth.
Knowledge-Rich & Sequenced: We ensure a progressive build of skills and knowledge. Concepts are revisited and reinforced, ensuring that learning sticks and builds upon prior foundations.
Inclusive & Adaptive: Every child at St. Joseph’s is entitled to a broad and balanced curriculum. We adapt our delivery to ensure that every learner, regardless of starting point, can access the full richness of our offer.
Contextualised: We utilize our local Stanford-le-Hope setting and our Catholic identity to make learning meaningful, connecting the classroom to the community and the wider world.
When a child leaves St. Joseph’s, they do so as a well-rounded individual who is independent in their choices, motivated by their goals, and cooperative in their spirit. They carry with them a creative mind, the stickability to face challenges, and a lifelong curiosity to keep seeking the truth.
"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." — John 10:10
I love that our learning links together. Our reading, writing and topic are all themed, which makes remembering things much easier. – Y5 girl
